Labor Standards in W2MO: Measuring Efficiency

W2MO is based on a predetermined time system. For typical elemental motions in logistics (both warehouse or production) timings are available (or can be given by the user). These elemental motions are aggregated to calculate the work efforts for any human work activity in warehousing or production:

The W2MO predetermined time system may use timings out of different sources. Alternatively timings can be recorded using the W2MO video process studies:

  • MTM: Splitting of any manual operation or method into basic motions and assigning a predetermined time standard. MTM gives values for the fundamental motions of: reach, move, turn, grasp, position, disengage, and release.
    The system uses time measurement units (TMU) instead of seconds. One TMU is defined as 0.036 seconds. These smaller units allow for more accurate calculations.
    MTM is divided in the three systems MTM-1, MTM-2 and MTM-3.
    MTM timings are very elemental and mostly applied in production.
  • MTM-1 operates at the basic motion element level. Most of the MTM-1 basic motions consist of hand and arm movements but also eye, leg, foot, and body actions.
  • MTM-2 combines basic motion elements into aggregates GET (Reach and Grasp) and PUT (Move and Position).
  • MTM-3 has four motion categories: Handle, Transport, Step & foot motions, Bend & arise.
  • MOST is based on MTM and focuses on the movement of objects (e.g., parts, tools) from one location to another in the workplace by using motion aggregates. MOST timings are best compatible with the W2MO predetermined times system.
  • W2MO VPS (video process studies) is an integrated app which allows to take videos for any activity. Privacy of workers is protected by using high tech head detection (machine learning). A comfortable editor allows to extract the timings for elemental motions. As those timings are derived from real processes usually the accuracy is better as standard timings provided by MTM or MOST.

The W2MO predetermined times systems allows the beneficial use of mathematical optimization algorithms

Throughout all planning processes (e.g. storage area allocation, round trip optimization, case pack portfolio optimization) each process is planned with the highest possible efficiency. Each process alternative can be evaluated using the W2MO predetermined times system. Based on that the mathematical optimization algorithm can chose/create the most efficient process.

For each logistic process or task modeled in the layout W2MO can calculate a target time using the W2MO predetermined times system. I.e., each employee knows the target time for a specific tasks. This is the same concept that has already been successfully implemented in manufacturing industries. Practical results show that W2MO is able to predict target times within +/- 5% of the effective times achieved afterwards.

W2MO continuously compares the obtained target times with the effective times. In case of major deviations the stored timings can be calibrated accordingly, i.e. to take into account specific characteristics of a certain layout. This information can be used in order to identify inefficiencies and potentials for improvements, but also to award more productive employees.

Additionally, target times for all tasks enable precise forecasts of workloads, which is the basis for an advanced staff planning.
